Our understanding of the climate system is improved through observations, theoretical studies, and modeling.

Summary

When it comes to climate science, how do scientists know what they know? While studies indicate that actively-publishing climate researchers virtually all agree that human activities are altering the climate system, the general public is under the impression that scientists are still debating whether or not humans are changing the climate (see the article by Doran and Zimmerman in the references section). Essential Principle 5 describes specific methods with which scientists study the climate system. These approaches follow the same methods and principles of all scientific research, have demonstrated their reliability over time, and have withstood the rigorous process of scientific peer review.
